The Ancient Thessalian Theaters


On the occasion of International Day of Monuments on Monday the 27 th of April 2009 in the multi-room events complex entitled Tsalapata at 6:30 pm, will be an free entrance event — a discussion on the subject: “ancient theaters in Thessaly”. The event is the first of a series of lectures in collaboration with the Archaeological Institute of Thessalian Studies and Volos Municipality — Municipal Center for History and Documentation the presentation and promotion of monuments in Thessaly, in an effort to display the local cultural heritage in view of organizing the Mediterranean Games of 2013.

This initiative will be implemented in three separate rounds of talks: the first is the presentation of the ancient theater of Thessaly, the second focuses on the excavation work of the ancient Iolkou and cultural background of the Argonautic campaign, while the third will be discussing the Paleolithic period in Thessaly, a region rich in findings, which remains today relatively unknown to the general public.

The choice of the subject of the first round of talks was based on the fact that the archaeological research in the area of Thessaly has so far brought to light a significant number of these ancient monuments, many of which survive in good condition and some have already restoration projects underway. The Thessalian theaters, held a variety of cultural events were the citizens have been assembled from the rich urban areas of Thessaly and therefore played a prominent role in the creation and exchange of ideas and ideological background of local communities. In the theaters and during the drama performances the ordinary Thessalian citizen not lived with his social circle, but was in contact with the symbolic heroes and their mythical stories that represented his ancestral past and further helping him to preserve historical memory and mental catharsis by involving the homeland gods.
