In the Footsteps of Pausanias


The starting day was in Tuesday the 3rd of May at 19:30. The Amphitheatre of Leonidas Zerbas of the National Hellenic Research Institute (EIE) was packed and the attendants were anxious for the introductory speech by Professor Glen W. Bowersock of the Institute for Advance Study with subject Pausanias Then and Now. Following the speech the opening of the exhibition took place in parallel of an impressive buffet-party.


The exhibitions, which are offered in both the EIE and the Gennadius Library of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens –the opening of the Gennadius Library’s exhibition was in the May 4th at 20:00- presents manuscripts, rare books, maps, historical and encaustic material based on Pasausians work and legacy. The exhibition based in the Gennadius Library includes original material from its personal collections. In the EIE the exhibition mainly presents re-productions which are coupled with characterized original works from publican and private collections. The exhibitions are going to be available for free to all visitors till the end of the month.


The International Symposium which started in the 3rd of May, ended in Saturday the 5th. A number of delegates are the following –posted in alphabetical order:

  • Open discussion: Nostalgia and the Antique with M. E. Rocha Pereira –chairman- and G.W. Bowersock, D. Mulliez, M. Georgopoulos, G. Tolias, P. Themele and P. Tournikiotes.
  • P. Themele, Pausanias in Messenia
  • P. Tournikiotes, The Pausanias assistance of the contemporary composition of the Greek architecture.
  • Tzifopoulos, Pausanias in the Olympia and its Inscriptions
  • U. Sinn, Pausanias in Olympia

Delegates and visitors can have, also, the opportunity to watch a documentary series which presents the Pausania’s work with interviews, encaustic material that aims to strengthen the everlasting important meaning of the Greek antiquity –a daily event.


In addition, there have been organized educational seminars during the symposium’s month, every Tuesday in 19:30 at the amphitheatre Leonidas Zerbas (EIE) –free entrance.


This unique symposium offered till now an amazing amount of informative material and it will continue to offer until the end of the current month. With no doubt a worth visiting venture!
